Not Dead Enough

This book deserves a solid 4.5 stars, without a doubt.

I found myself thoroughly enjoying this story, marking it as my first experience with this particular author. I’m genuinely excited to explore the other books in this series in the near future. While there were a few minor instances of sentences feeling slightly out of order, these issues were not significant enough to detract from the overall narrative. The pacing commenced a bit slowly, but it quickly gained momentum, particularly with the entrance of the main female character. The plot was well-structured, providing a refreshing and engaging flow that made it easy to follow along and immerse myself in the story. The character development was commendable, with each individual embodying their roles in a way that felt authentic within their contexts. I found myself rooting for all the characters, even the antagonists, as they were portrayed in a way that made their actions believable and, honestly, relatable.

The protagonist, Brett Perkins, was a soldier whose life took a tragic turn at the hands of a mysterious entity known as the Project, which ultimately led to his death. However, his story does not end there—he was resurrected, only to discover that life after death was far from a dream. Following the destruction of their base, which resulted from a daring escape by its inhabitants, Brett and his team are now tasked with hunting down and eliminating a group of rogue vampires. These cunning creatures have evaded capture since the chaos of the base’s demise. When they begin abducting human women, Brett and his companions quickly realize that the situation is dire and cannot bode well for the victims involved. Their urgency escalates when they arrive on the scene just moments after the latest victim has been snatched away.

Julia Collier, the female lead, is navigating her own turbulent life, recently separated and in the throes of a divorce from her husband. Her ex-husband is a well-regarded figure in their town, which has unfortunately resulted in a campaign to tarnish Julia’s reputation, turning friends and acquaintances against her. Adding to the tension, her ex has dispatched thugs to follow her, issuing threats that leave her feeling cornered and vulnerable. When she discovers men lurking outside her home, she fears that her ex is finally poised to act on his threats, prompting her to muster the courage to fight back. What she fails to realize is the true nature of the individuals who are actually after her.

I was particularly drawn to Julia’s character; she embodies strength and resilience in the face of adversity. Instead of crumbling under pressure, she stands her ground, showcasing a remarkable fortitude that is often lacking in female characters within the genre. The male characters are equally compelling, portraying soldiers who transcend typical stereotypes and embody camaraderie and friendship that go beyond mere battlefield bonds.

Overall, I believe this story will captivate anyone interested in the paranormal, offering a blend of suspense, strong characters, and vivid storytelling that keeps readers engaged from start to finish.

I have to say, my enjoyment of this series and its characters runs deep. With each new installment, the characters continue to develop and exhibit increasingly nuanced personalities, while new figures leap off the page, brimming with vibrant energy. The author skillfully integrates the introduction of these new characters and their circumstances into the ongoing narrative, maintaining a seamless flow without any major disruptions. The Chicago backdrop serves as a fantastic canvas for the story, one that resonates with me personally and adds to my overall enjoyment.

This particular book picks up right where “Bound Guardian Angel” left off. We find Micah in a state of emotional turmoil as he grapples with the shocking revelation that he has a half-brother and that his father is alive. His father’s emotional struggle following the loss of his mate has profoundly impacted the way his brother was brought up, leading to a complicated and troubling situation that Micah must now navigate.

As the narrative unfolds, more secrets come to light, indicating that Micah’s life is about to undergo significant changes, albeit not in the ways he had envisioned. Some of these revelations hit him hard, particularly one from King Bain that shatters everything Micah believed about himself and his family dynamics.

The story begins with a gripping prologue set 950 years ago amid a fierce battle that ultimately shapes Micah’s character and influences his approach to life’s challenges. From that point, the narrative skillfully shifts to the present day, illustrating the reasons behind Micah’s profound appreciation for Samantha, who brings light into his otherwise tumultuous life.

The portrayal of the vampire world is intriguing and refreshingly unique. The stark age difference between Micah and Katarina serves as a poignant reminder that, within their realm, age is merely a social construct rather than a definitive measure of one’s worth or abilities.

In summary, I absolutely love this series, adore the author’s distinctive storytelling style, and am thrilled with this latest entry. I eagerly anticipate what comes next in this captivating saga. Enjoy this book as much as I did!

I have been an avid reader of this series since its inception, and with each new installment, my investment in the story and characters has only deepened. The author has crafted characters with such depth and complexity that they resonate deeply with me. Their emotional journeys and distinct personalities are captivating, making it nearly impossible to resist becoming attached to them. While my only critique might be that some subplots are fairly predictable—though that could simply be my perspective—I find that this does not significantly diminish my overall enjoyment of the story. In fact, the intricate backgrounds and well-developed supporting characters enhance the narrative, adding richness and depth to the overarching tale being told.

At the heart of this series is Trace, a character who has spent his life in search of various things, including his true mate and a mentor who can help him harness the potent power within him. With Micah, Trace discovers a dominant partner capable of providing the grounding he has long sought. Yet, finding his mate feels more like a distant dream than a reality, as the journey to connect with one’s true partner can sometimes span multiple lifetimes.

This story revolves around two individuals grappling with trust issues and struggles to connect with others. Cordray, for instance, harbors many secrets from those around her—ranging from her mysterious parentage to the affliction that has shadowed her life for an astounding 800 years. Similarly, Trace battles with his own demons on a daily basis, primarily the overwhelming guilt he carries from the loss of his mother.

I’ve had a strong affinity for Trace since his initial introduction, but I found it more challenging to warm up to Cordray, much like Micah, due to her abrasive and seemingly unlikable demeanor at first. This was especially difficult to reconcile given that she is introduced as the love interest of my favorite bald vampire. However, as the narrative unfolds, it becomes clear that there is more beneath her tough exterior, and her character begins to evolve.

Overall, this series stands out as a remarkable journey filled with a diverse cast of characters and unexpected twists that will keep you reading well into the night, defying the constraints of bedtime.

I have been a devoted reader of this series since its inception with the Elemental Mysteries, and each new release from any of its various offshoots continues to bring me joy and excitement. The characters within this expansive universe are masterfully crafted, each one intricately developed and brought to life with a vibrancy that makes them feel almost real. This dynamic cast not only enhances the storytelling but also makes for an engaging and enjoyable reading experience. The setting itself is a remarkable blend of the familiar world and fantastical elements, allowing readers to easily recognize aspects of reality while still being immersed in a rich, imaginative landscape. The author’s writing is nothing short of exceptional, consistently drawing me back for more adventures and stories.

In this particular book, we are treated to a heartwarming reunion of many beloved couples from previous installments, as they come together to celebrate the holiday season while also rallying for a significant occasion. Among them, we get an in-depth look at the lives of Baojia and Natalie, one of the series’ most cherished couples.

For eight years, Baojia and Natalie have endeavored to lead as normal a life as possible within the complexities of an immortal existence. Their focus on nurturing family ties, advancing their careers, maintaining friendships, and deepening their love for one another has largely been successful. However, reality is about to intrude in a significant way, confronting them with challenges they believed they had ample time to prepare for. As is often the case, the situation grows increasingly complicated, presenting unforeseen obstacles that test their resilience.

What stands out in this narrative is the powerful theme of support and chosen family. Despite the impending trials, Baojia and Natalie are not alone; they are surrounded by a supportive network of both human and vampire friends who come together to offer comfort and assistance. This sense of community adds layers to the story and highlights the strength found in relationships.

The serious themes tackled in this book could have easily been mishandled, but the author navigates them with remarkable sensitivity and understanding. There is a perfect balance of humor interwoven with the more somber moments, showcasing the courage required to confront life-altering situations. Lemuel, the town’s solitary vampire, is deeply invested in unraveling the mystery. He has been meticulously translating a collection of ancient texts, believing these may hold crucial insights into the strange occurrences.

Fiji and her circle of friends find themselves grappling with a deep sense of unease and confusion as the situation escalates. It is only when Fiji reveals to her companions that she has been hearing a disembodied voice seemingly urging others to a fatal destiny that the group begins to grasp the gravity of their situation. Notably, the situation also weighs heavily on Olivia, who must confront her own challenges amidst the turmoil facing their community. The decisions that must be made have the potential to irrevocably alter the lives of everyone in Midnight, leading to outcomes that could be either disastrous or transformative.

I thoroughly enjoyed this installment and genuinely hope for more installments in the future. Midnight has become an enchanting place full of intrigue, making it an irresistible destination for readers. If you haven’t yet delved into this series, I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so; it is truly a captivating journey.

The first three novellas provide a solid introduction to the series, acquainting us with key characters in Ben and Tenzin’s story. I give it 4.5 stars for the significant enjoyment it offers. Though not immediately gripping, by the second chapter, I was fully engaged and eager to see what would unfold next. The introduction of new characters and the return of familiar ones is appreciated after some time.

Benjamin Vecchio has abandoned his tumultuous life in New York, where he was raised by a famed vampire assassin. Now an adult, he comes back to the city that once brought him sorrow, intent on establishing an identity separate from his aunt and uncle. With Tenzin at his side, Ben begins to set up an antiquities recovery business in New York, echoing Giovanni’s rare book enterprise in California.

On a business outing one night, Ben encounters Chloe, his high school sweetheart, and they rekindle their relationship. Chloe introduces Ben to the works of Emil Samson, her celebrated artist, at an art gallery. There, Ben is struck by two discoveries: a troubling story from a young woman tied to a missing artwork, part of a trilogy, which he pledges to find pro bono, much to Tenzin’s chagrin. Moreover, their endeavors rarely proceed without complications.

This installment brings just the right amount of thrill, setting the stage for future books. It also addresses a grave domestic issue with appropriate sensitivity and attention. The experience is highly enjoyable, particularly when experienced through an audiobook that brings the characters to life vividly.

Although I adore the characters, they seemed somewhat underdeveloped in this instance. I missed the usual action associated with Ben and Tenzin as they strive to establish their business. The new characters didn’t excite me, but there’s always potential for growth if they reappear.

In the Elemental world, reputation is crucial, yet it’s a double-edged sword. Benjamin Vecchio is venturing into the world of antiquities hunting and is in dire need of clients. His uncle’s notoriety as a legendary fire vampire assassin has generated much intrigue but hasn’t translated into job offers. Benjamin needs a significant find to earn the recognition and prestige he seeks. If he can recover Brennus the Celt’s lost sword, he believes it could be his breakthrough. All he needs is for a descendant of Brennus to employ him for the search.

Securing his reputation might also endanger his life, but that’s par for the course in the perilous realm of ancient vampires.

It remains an excellent choice for fans of the series.

Once more, I was drawn into the world of these unique vampires with their fascinating lives. The humans connected to them are equally intriguing, living alongside predators who are just a moment away from turning on them. The seamless introduction of new characters gives an immediate understanding of their personas.

Ben expected a tranquil summer before his final college semester, but that was wishful thinking. Tenzin, intrigued by the prospect of locating a trove of invaluable medieval coins for the vampire ruling Naples, planned a trip to Italy.

Ben vowed not to get entangled in another of Tenzin’s plots. A year later, he finds himself on the brink of another Italian adventure with her, lacking crucial details. Once again, Tenzin’s actions surprise him, revealing hidden agendas. Yet, this apparent debacle might have a silver lining.

The sequel may lack the action of its predecessor, but it offers a more compelling narrative that delves deeper into Ben and Tenzin’s relationship. Ben contemplates his significance to Tenzin, who appears to have claimed him as her own. As they embark on their new partnership and living situation, their lives are bound to become even more entwined.
