Fury

I have never read this author before but really love her style based on this particular book. I was drawn into the story from the beginning and had a hard time putting it down to do anything else. I really liked Fury when he was introduced and felt for everything that happened to him. It took me a little longer to fully warm up to Ellie but I did because she seemed so sincere about everything she did, if a bit impulsive. All the other characters were very well fleshed out and it makes me more than ready to read their stories as well. The timeline is never stated so I have no idea whether this is the near future or the present, but science would say it is more a future event.

Fury was born and bred through the fusion of human and animal DNA to be an unwilling test subject at Mercile Industries. His life has been nothing but pain and betrayal from a human after human and he has come to hate them. Because they created him they feel they can treat him like an animal and do as they please. When a new nurse comes into his cell she seems to be different, she smiles at him and tries not to hurt him. He begins to trust her and looks forward to when she comes. But then one human he has trusted betrays him and he swears that if he is ever freed he will kill her.

Ellie Brower was working as a nurse at the corporate headquarters of Mercile Industries and was unaware of the more immoral testing that was being done in the name progress. When she is approached by a law enforcement officer about going undercover in the secret lab she is willing because she feels that they are abusing people not just animals. When she first sees Fury, known as 416, she is immediately attracted to him and wants nothing more than to save him. When she has to betray him it is the hardest thing she has ever done.

This was a great story with a lot of action, gun fights, hate groups, and raids. There was also a love story that was hard won by the two people involved and some seriously HOT love scenes that could make you blush. The New Species are some of the hottest-sounding hybrids I have read about in a while and if only they were available. I would recommend this book very highly. I am hoping the rest of the series is just as good.

The Unwanted

I have read the previous books in this series and always enjoyed them. While I liked this one it did not hold the same impact that the others did. I don’t think it was because it was shorter but just that the characters did not seem as engaging as at other times. The story was also a little thinner but important to tell. This was more about the two agents than it was about the case that they were supposed to be working. There was a lot of soul-searching and inner dialogue about the past and how it had affected them and not enough about the crime.

Destin Mortin and Caleb Durand had been partners in an FBI unit that was separate but equal to the one run by Taylor Jones. Caleb’s specialty is that he can filter and help a psychic to better handle their gift by making things clearer for them and taking some of the pain and anxiety. Destin’s gift is one that comes with a high price, she excels at tracking rapists but not just any rapists, she tracks the most violent.

When Caleb starts to lose himself in Destin and cannot tell where she ends and he begins he decides to leave. Destin is left heartbroken but blames him for not caring and does not look at herself as part of the problem. When he is brought into a case 5 years later she is not happy to see him because she believes she has moved on. Life can be unfair but sometimes fate gives you a second chance.

This was a nice enough story but I would have been just as happy to have more of the case and a bit less of the emotional stuff. Would still recommend it, just not enthusiastically.

When Darkness Comes

I am just lucking into good authors all over the place these days. I guess I have been missing out on some great reads because I get so stuck on my favorites. I think this may just be another of my favorites. I liked the characters and the way that things progressed in the story. It was a little bit of instalove but it could be forgiven since they at least had been around each other more than a few days. I could however have done without the term ‘lover’ being used as an endearment from start to finish, it really did not resonate with me at all. Most of the dialogue was smooth and seemed to fit the characters but every once in a while things would come off a little stiff.

Abby Barlow ends up having one hell of a day. There is an explosion, she watches her employer die, has a bizarre dream, and finds herself on the run with Dante a man she both fears and desires. Dante was guardian to Abby’s employer for 341 years against his will. But now as the spirit which he has protected falls on Abby, he finds it not the burden it had been in the past. As Dante tries to protect Abby from the dark forces gathering to kill her they find that things are worse than either could have ever imagined.

I liked both Dante and Abby because I could identify with both of them as people. Abby had a horrible childhood but still managed to be a fairly positive person. I would have liked to get some more background on Dante since it was pretty sparse as far as getting to know him.

I like the action and romance of the story. I would recommend it to anyone who has a thing for vampire romance.

A Werewolf to call Her Own

I really do like this series. It’s pretty much light and fluffy with a nice romance that may not go smoothly but you know it will work out in the end. You get just what you need from this book and the others because you just want to be taken away for a while and this does that perfectly. The characters are who they need to be and you don’t need to go super deep because they give you enough. The location is exotic but could be almost any Island paradise you can imagine so it almost tailors to the individual.

Maxim is on vacation from the rigors of being beta to a pack he helped build. He has always had a hard time relaxing but this place seems to be working. Ceara is a young vampire, full blood, who is at Mystic Isle for the solstice but has a bucket list she would love to work on. When Maxim sees the young vamp he is enchanted and wants to meet her, and he gets his chance when she is approached by a demon who scares her. Maxim knows right away that she deserves better than him but cannot help wanting to spend what time he can with her.

Ceara falls fast for the werewolf who rescues her and just wants him to be the one. After being cloistered for so long she just wants to break out and enjoy herself if possible. Maxim could do that for her or he could cause her true heartache.

It kind of bugged me that the spelling of Ceara’s name changed from time to time. Other than that I found everything to be great. Look for that HEA for Ceara and Max.

Raphael

This is the first time I have read this author and I am very glad I had the fortune to find this book. While the plot starts out slow-moving, it is interesting from the beginning as we get to know the characters who will be important as the series moves forward. The prologue sets the stage for the story which will be told within the body. The characters themselves come across very well with personality quirks that make sense for the backgrounds they have been given. Then there are some who still have more time to have their personalities become more solid. The world they live in is very familiar to me since it is a place that I actually drive to or through on an almost daily basis.

Raphael is a Vampire Lord with the power of life and death over every vampire within his territory. He has the loyalty of thousands. A gang of humans attack his compound and kidnap a female vampire under his protection. Because humans are involved along with vampires he decides to hire a human investigator to help flush out his enemies. What he does not expect is to be drawn to that investigator so forcefully.

Cynthia Leighton is smart, tough, and sexy, she is also a private detective and former cop. When Raphael comes to her for help she is more than happy to oblige since she is tired of the cheating spouses and tracking bank accounts. Her work with the vampires may not always go over well with the human population but she can do things for them that regular law enforcement will not. Cynthia finds Raphael to be very magnetic but she wants to keep her distance because her heart is not a part of the bargain.

Loved this first book and had to read the next one immediately. I think it would be great for anyone who has a love of vampires and the culture they have established here. Highly recommend!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

And yet as powerful as each of them was, none was so powerful as Raphael himself. Some were older, but age was not everything. Some claimed greater skill, but skill was no substitute for strength. These things were never spoken of; they were simply understood. Boundaries were observed, respect was paid. Anything else would lead to war. And none of the men in this room wanted another war. But someone did. Someone thought to use Alexandra against him. And that someone would pay dearly.

Date with Death

Date with Death by Eve Langlais

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have to give this 4.5 stars because it made me smile the whole time I was reading it. The characters were really fun and interesting with some witty banter and sexy moves.

Marigold has a date with Death both literally and figuratively. Death is coming to claim her soul for Hell but he finds that she can see him, which is not right, and she figures out how she is to die and so avoids it. What she does next both confounds and surprises Death when she invites him to dinner the next night.

Mick is an Aztec god who is a good friend of Lucifer and one of many who take on the mantle of death. He is fascinated by the witch who can see him and wants to know why. But should he really go to dinner with someone he was originally sent to reap?

The couple is fun and hot. The story is interesting with a minor twist that surprised me at least since I had not thought beyond the obvious. I would definitely recommend this and the previous books in the series.

Mictain, the Aztec god of death and collector of souls for Satan himself, translocated—a new fancy term created by the office for metaphysical terminology and scientific advancement for folding space and time to get from point A to point B immediately—back to his home in Hades. His head still shook in disbelief over his encounter with the confounding human.

A Demon and His Psycho

Welcome to Hell indeed! This is a place that you might not mind visiting because the denizens may be damned but they seem to be having a great time, at least those in the inner circle. Lucifer is an egotist who enjoys making mischief for his minions. This is a fun series that keeps giving you some interesting takes on demons, witches, and other residents of Hell.

When his granddaughter’s pet dragon goes missing Lucifer decides to pair up Katie and Xaphan to bring it back and punish the thief.

Katie comes flying into Xaphan’s life upsetting centuries of self-inflicted misery. How can he stay true to the one he lost when a bubbly, mismatch-eyed psycho keeps consuming his thoughts. She is nuts but Katie’s insanity comes in handy for the devil as his favorite problem solver. Xaphan is one of Lucifer’s favorite soldiers and he does not want to see any harm come to him, even though he set him up with a psycho killer. Xaphan has held onto his vow to never be with another woman for 300 years, but for some reason can see himself breaking it.

The story runs fairly quickly and the characters are definitely interesting. Fun ride!

“When she whirled to protest, he picked her up and took the stairs two at a time. The giggle as she clutched at him rang like music to his ears. “You’ll wear yourself out. It’s still two more flights.” “It’s you that needs to worry about stamina,” he growled. “It’s been more than three hundred years since I’ve had a woman.” “Thanks for the warning,” she whispered in his ear. “That means I better take care of you first so you’ve got time to recover for the main event.”

Shadows of Bourbon Street

I continue to enjoy these books because I like the characters and the setting. They are not deep and sometimes you can figure out what’s going on very quickly but they are nonetheless entertaining and that is all I want. I have found that listening and reading are both great fun with this series. The narrator, Traci Odem, is fantastic as she gives depth to the characters through her vocalizations of them. You cannot be bored when you know the backdrop is New Orleans, though I would be happy with more about mardi gras if it going to be used as a device. This was a quick read that held my interest and kept me wanting to continue to the next book.

Jade and Kane are about to say ‘I do’ when the High Angel interrupts the nuptials to give them their first assignment as Shadow Walkers. A witch is in trouble and only Jade and Kane can save her. But of course, there is more going on than meets the eye and this couple falls into it.

With three plots running it could become hard to figure out what is going on but that is not the case. Each crisis has a start, a middle, and an ending that is satisfying. One gripe is that every book has someone in Jade’s circle gaining some type of power or gift. That can get a bit monotonous. But the books are fun and fast reads so it is worth it.

Angels of Bourbon Street

Angels of Bourbon Street by Deanna Chase

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoy these books and I like most of the characters because they have been able to grow as the series has moved forward, then there are some I could do without sometimes. Being set in New Orleans makes this work perfectly for the way things seem to go for everyone here. I have never been but every time I read one of these books I can imagine that I am visiting the French Quarter or the Garden District because of the vivid descriptions of the locales. I chose to listen and read because it does make it so much easier to keep the story going when I am on the go. I can listen in my office at work while still being productive and relaxed.

Jade has been left with only half her soul because of circumstances beyond her control, even though she was doing the right thing. But she decides that nothing is going to stop her from marrying the man of her dreams, Kane. Well, things never go smoothly for Jade no matter how much she wants it to.

Jade is possessed by the ghost residing in Kane’s family home while making arrangements for her wedding. Though they are able to save her once it becomes clear that in her weakened state she is easy prey. Now she will have to live with the person who has the other half of her soul in order to keep her safe, but that does not help her friends.

The narrator, Traci Odom, does a great job of bringing the characters to life, both male and female. If you have enjoyed the first three books in this series then you will enjoy the continued adventures of this new to her craft witch.

“Everyone in this room knows I’m going to say yes, but I’m not willing to let the realm have complete control over us. If we were to become slaves to you, our lives would hardly be worth living anyway. So my offer to you is this: the pair of us will accept your condition of becoming shadowwalkers, but we want to be compensated as a low-level angel would. We also want all the benefits and rights that they have under your laws. There will be no exceptions because we are humans.”

Veiled

I have been waiting for this book since Experiment in Terror ended with an HEA for two of my favorite characters to date. I loved the character of ADA because she was so outspoken for a teenager and it is good to see her a little more grown up here though affected by what had happened. This is a standalone which will be great if there are no other books, though I am hoping for more. The story is good though I still felt like it could have been better. It felt a little thin because I never understood why things were happening the way they were.

Ada knows what her sister Perry can do, she also knows that her grandmother Pippa had some of the same talents, so why does she try to deny her own. Ada wants to be normal but it is kind of hard to do that when you see ghosts. Ada has also been dreaming about a man, one she believes she met at Perry and Dex’s wedding but they do not seem to remember him. Is he real or a ghost?

When a new couple moves in next door and it turns out that one of the people renting a room from them is the guy from her dreams Ada has to stop and take notice. From the day she speaks to Jay her life will never be the same again.

If you have never read the EIT series this will work for you because you don’t need to know a lot and some of the back story is given to you. If you are a fan of EIT but have not read the final two books then this one will spoil them, so do not read. But if you are a fan and have read all the books this will take you on a new journey with familiar characters.
