Rise of the Fallen

Rise of the Fallen by Donya Lynne   Rise of the Fallen (AKM, #1)
by Donya Lynne

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have to say that as soon as I started reading I was pulled directly into the world of Micah Black. Though I did not know who he was at first I knew that this was going to be someone I could like based on how dark and tortured he appeared because you know that he feels deep. The plot of this book is very straight forward and keeps moving at a good pace which allows you to follow the action without getting bogged down. There are no slow spots of weird changes to deal with, no shifts in time or tense to keep track of, you know what is going on every step of the way.

When you consider that most of the main characters are vampires, you can still relate to them and what they are dealing with as people. I could imagine knowing someone like Trace, a nice guy who is quiet and keeps to himself but is looking to make a friend of the guy everyone else avoids. I know sometimes the dialogue in these books can seem kind of stilted or forced, but that is not the case here. The dialogue seems to be very true to who each of the characters are, keeping in mind that some of them are quite old. 😉

Our main character is Micah Black who works at AKM (All the Kings Men) as an enforcer, he keeps the peace between the drecks (lower vampires) and upper level vampires. Micah has fallen into a dark place because of the lose of his mate and is looking for a way to continue living as he is or to die. Samantha Garrett is working as a stripper after leaving her abusive husband and simply wants to make enough money to get a new identity so she can feel free. They have nothing in common but when they cross paths it is salvation them both.

My favorite quote from Micah, “If they made a move on Sam, he’d fuck up their world so righteously the galaxy would shift from the gravitational pull of his wrath.”

Micah is not a man you want to get in the way of, he is fierce, passionate, and loyal. Who wouldn’t want a man to feel like that about them. You see these traits in all the characters, they are a group I cannot wait to find out more about! In this first of the series we get to meet Micah but in subsequent novels we will get more on the other enforcers at AKM. Each should be just as exciting and hot as this one. I will be reading them as fast as I can get them.

There is some talk of BDSM but it is fairly mild though some of the scenes are good and hot even without it. Also if M/M action makes you squeamish you may want to skip.

Kade’s Dark Embrace

Kade's Dark Embrace by Kym Grosso   Kade’s Dark Embrace (Immortals of New Orleans, #1)
by Kym Grosso

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was just WOW! I am totally and completely in love with Kade Isaccson. The start of this book is so laid back at first you have no idea where it might take you, then Kade spots a woman he is drawn to and you know that their paths are going to cross before long. I knew I was going to enjoy this at that point. If I am intrigued within the first few pages I have to be ready for an all night read.

Kade has been called to Philly from his home in New Orleans by his friend Tristan (an Alpha) who says that a rogue vampire is rumored to be in the city. When a body is found on washed up on the dock apparently drained of blood and with the looks of a ritualistic killing Kade is sure he is right. Detective Sydney Willows is assigned to the case and does not like working with supernaturals but she does not have any choice if the case turns out to be a vampire kill. An attraction between these two could cause more problems for their investigation than either is ready to deal with.

This is a sexy, romantic story with a killer who uses magic, voodoo, and vampire powers to wreak havoc on a city as well as those looking them. This story flows seamlessly from start to finish and pulls you in as it builds to the final showdown with an evil that has no limits.

Sydney and Kade are hot together and would make me blush if I weren’t enjoying it so much. This is a great read for anyone.

How to Date a Vampire

How to Date a Vampire by Rose Pressey   How to Date a Vampire (Rylie Cruz #2)
by Rose Pressey

This is a 3.5 star read. Rylie Cruz is a great character and I love her to death but she can be so out there sometimes. With that said, I do like the story here. It’s a fun quick run through the streets of New Orleans as Rylie faces yet another obstacle in her quest to finally get close to Jack.

When last we saw Rylie she was getting ready to rush to her parents house along with Jack. Well apparently when they arrive they end up in a fight with the vampires who have come looking for her Uncle Ernie. During the fight Jack is bitten and while Rylie hopes for the best, based on movie transformations, she knows that she may now be dating a vampire. Things only take a turn for the worse, as if things could get any worse, when the vampires comes and want to take Jack away for an unknown reason.

Also getting in on the action are Rylie’s best friend and roommate Jennifer Matthews, who is human along with Lily the crazy client and werewolf who will not go away. With various vampires who all seem to have varying agendas, Rylie has no idea who to turn to for help.

If you are in the mood for a light read with characters that are appealing and fun, then this is for you. I found myself actually laughing out loud at times and that means it definitely has merit.

Be aware however that it does contain some spelling errors, extra words, and missing words throughout. I know that can bother some, but does not detract from the story itself.

Forget Me Not and Testing Fate

Forget Me Not by Belinda Boring                     Forget Me Not (Mystic Wolves, #2)
by Belinda Boring

I really like this series, I started reading and could not put it down. This has everything you could want in a story. Our hero’s are heroic and will not be pushed around or aside, the villain’s are crazy or just plain nasty and treacherous.

Just as Darcy and Mason think they can get back their life and plans a threat from Mason’s past shows up to make trouble. They have survived the murder of Mason’s sister and an attempted hostile take-over but what comes running through their door could be more than even they can handle. Amber, a past romance that Mason does not want to remember shows up and announces that she is the true mate of the Alpha making for a very awkward situation. The mating ritual is three weeks away and now they must deal with a situation which could become very dangerous for all involved.

This installment gives us a look at who Mason was before he became the Alpha of the Mystic Wolves and what he endured to get where he is. It also has an unrepentant woman, power struggles, attempted murder, manipulation, and black magic. There are also witches and vampires among other supernatural creatures. Give this series a chance and it will grow on you.

Testing Fate by Belinda Boring         Testing Fate (Mystic Wolves #3)
by Belinda Boring

Another great entry that had me reading all night. Maybe it’s just me, but I really love these characters and have to give this 4.5 stars. The only thing that kind of bothers me is that each book ends with a cliffhanger, hate cliffhangers, but at least it starts exactly where it left off.

After an accusation is made against Darcy the fates step in to verify that she is Mason’s true mate. The couple have no choice but to undergo a dangerous trial in order to prove once and for all that they are meant to be together. Devlin, the vampire enforcer goes along with Darcy on her trial in order to help her as he can. The question is will they be able to complete the trials and finally be able to move on with their lives or will they die trying.

Both of these books are excellent reads and I am looking forward to the fourth installment. Another cliffhanger ending. Ugh!

Ascent of Blood

Ascent of Blood by Elizabeth Marx

Ascent of Blood (The Red Veil Series, #1)
by Elizabeth Marx

My rating:  5 of 5 stars

I received this book for free from Goodreads First Reads.

I truly loved this entry! After reading Descent of Blood I could not wait to find out what else was in store for The House of Imperials. Here we are transported from 1465 Cardiff to 1990 London and I was not disappointed!

When Dr. Everleigh Marbut, an American, comes to London in search of the Book of Descent she finds much more than she ever thought possible. She is studying vampire lore, though she does not believe in them, and the House of Imperials in particular. Her inquiry draws the attention of Prince Sebastian Pearce, the son of Severian and Meridian, who will rule the House of Imperials when his father steps down. When they meet there is an instant connection, but he cannot believe that after waiting 600 years for a mate, one who could carry immortal children, the fates would send him someone who seems to be so damaged. As Everleigh and Sebastian fight against their connection they do not realize that forces are aligning against them.

” Sometimes, love is conceived in the mind of a man long before it is ever realized.”

While this is a story of two people who are destined for each other but would rather fight than admit their feelings. It is also a story about genetic manipulation, betrayal, political posturing, and obsession. The House of Imperials is being targeted from multiple sides but can Sebastian stop the fall and still find the love he has sought for centuries?

” The destiny of his lineage, and the bond forged between them, now rests in their acceptance of each other AS THEY ARE.”

A book you will not be able to put down until the last page has been read. And then you will simply want more.

Descent of Blood

I received this book for free from Goodreads First Reads.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have never been over fond of history, but if it had been written like this I might have enjoyed it a lot more.

Descent of Blood (The Red Veil Series, #0.5)          by Elizabeth Marx

The story begins in England in 1465 during the War of the Roses, a bloody time in British history. This is a time when the King Henry was defending his thrown against the usurper Richard. Some of the lords backing Henry were actually vampires who felt that keeping him on the throne would protect them from being found out by others. While this is happening you have separate factions who are using the turmoil to attempt to solidify their own positions.

But this more than just a tale about war it is about a connection between a vampire and a human, a connection so deep that it even has a name ‘The Red Veil’. It is a connection so deep that it calls to the individuals body, blood and soul. It can cause a connection which can lead to the brink of madness if they cannot be with the one they desire. Meridian is the daughter of Lord Neville and innocent, Lord Severian Pearce comes to her castle tracking a man who knows about vampires and is on the opposite side of their battle. Severian is well-known and feared by many but he wants more from his eternal life than that and Meridian could be exactly what he has been looking for.

This was one of those stories I could not put down once I started and had to keep reading until I found out how things were resolved. The characters seemed true to the time period, a girl who was modest and chaste, a man who was a warrior and every inch the hero. There are unexpected twists, political posturing, romance, betrayal, and a fair bit of violence. I am looking forward to the next entry because this one really caught my attention. Loved it!!

Carwyn

Building From Ashes (Elemental World, #1)Building From Ashes by Elizabeth Hunter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have loved this family of vampires from the first book I picked up and this one is no exception.

The basics: Carwyn, a 1000 yr old priest finds that he is no longer as satisfied in his life or vocation as he once was. We see the events of the previous books from his perspective as well as find out what was really happening to him during this time without interruption. Can a thousand-year old vampire find love after so long? Carwyn is the “father” of a large and close-knit clan in Ireland that he will do anything to protect.

What made this nice was that you still had cameos by characters you had come to love and miss. Gio and Beatrice had a voice, so it was not like you only had new characters to get to know. We even get to see a bit of what Ben was doing while Beatrice was getting her blood lust under control.

I loved this because it had all the romance, mystery, blood lust, family, vampire intrigue that I come to expect. If you have a love of vampires with the best powers and best personalities then you will want to read this. Never disappoints and leaves me wanting more!

The Thirst Within

When I started this I was not sure what to expect. I am so happy I read this! I love vampires and though these are a little low-key at the moment I have no doubt things are going to heat up both with blood and romance.

The basics: Tori is a seventeen year old orphan who has been shipped off to New Orleans to live with an uncle she does not know and his family. She meets a man, Thierry, who says he wants to be her friend and starts a relationship with him. While at his place she meets his brother, Corben, who seems to take an instant dislike to her, or so she thinks, and asks that she leave. But things are not the way they seem to Tori and she wants to know what secrets are being hidden from her. When she finds out things get very interesting.

Meet the cast: Tori is like most teenagers, her self-esteem is not the greatest because she has had a rough time. She is smart, funny, pretty, interesting and does not realize it. We would have been the best of friends.
Thierry is a gorgeous man who initially says he is 21 years old and captivates Tori by always being around to help her. He has not been completely honest with Tori about so many things, but very honest about others. He has an agenda.
Corben is said to be Thierry’s brother and is more introverted though as handsome or more so than Thierry. He has very deep and personal reasons for the way he acts toward Tori.

There is a love triangle emerging and it is going to be so much fun to see how it is resolved. Did I forget to mention that both Corben and Thierry are vampires? Well they are and that always means excitement when a woman is involved.

I loved this first entry and cannot wait for the next. I always have hated “to be continued” because it means I can’t just stay immersed in the world I have entered. I would say if you like romance and vampires, this is a book for you. I couldn’t put it down once I started.
