I still love the Anita Blake series because I have come to really like and appreciate the characters. Yes, I know how they will react in some situations, just I know how my own family will react to certain things. This just makes it more a part of me. If I did not feel this way then I would not have stayed with it this long because 25 books is a lot. There are the characters who are well known and and though they may not change in major ways they have subtle changes in the way they think and do things. Then there are always new characters both alive, dead, and shifter who sometimes are interesting and sometimes bland, but most will not be seen again.

Damian, Anita’s vampire servant is in a state that she nor anyone else has seen for hundreds of years. He is not dying as the sun comes up but falls into a sleep that results in his having nightmares and waking to blood sweats so bad he seems to have bled out. Then a call comes from Edward/Ted from Ireland about vampire attacks. The thing is there are supposedly no vampires in Ireland, or at least none have been seen.

There is not a lot Anita can do when she is not wanted in Ireland, but if she goes she is planning to take Damian back into the sphere of She Who Made Him. That could be the worst idea she has ever had.

I know there are people who have read the series in the past and are now extremely critical because they don’t like the direction it took. I would say to those people, Do Not Read It, and then you cannot be disappointed. For those who still enjoy the series as it has progressed I would say that you will likely enjoy this just as much. For me things continue to move in a way that works for me and seems right for the characters. That is all I want, plus it entertains and draws me away for a time. Not to mention that I would not hate being in Anita’s place one bit.

Blood Guilt (Blood Hunters #1)

This was a new to me author and I am really glad I took a chance to try someone new. I was pulled in because I found the cover art to be interesting and after reading the blurb it seemed like a fit. While I was not instantly into the story it did not take long for me to find myself falling into the narrative. The Hunters here were different from some of the others I had read about but were still familiar. I liked that the location was not in the U.S. or some other regular locale, that gave a little more edge for me since I had to work to visualize, also a good thing since it just drew me in more. I liked the characters from the start because I could feel who they were and what they were about right away, it made me care. There are multiple points of view instead of just one person so you can track the story.

Michaela has been a hunter for most of her life, ever since they rescued her after her family was killed by a vampire in their home. As a result she hates all vampires regardless of what they may do that is not murderous, including saving her from certain death. Maximilian is a vampire with an unsavory past of betrayal and power grabbing. He exiled himself hundreds of years ago for his part in the overthrow of his friend and mentor Saloman, but has recently surfaced as Saloman attempts to forge an alliance with the Hunters for the betterment of all.

While Saloman attempts to keep his agenda on track with the Hunters and they are more or less cooperating, someone else has plans that would kill millions of people and bring civilization under the hand of a few deluded vampires. Michaela and Maximilian find out about the plan by accident but plan to thwart it at all costs, particularly since they are trying to use a young boy to amplify their efforts.

This book had a lot of good stuff with good fights, hot sex, betrayals, and stinging revelations. Definitely worth reading and continuing on.

Maximilian had shown her that vampires could suffer. Well, he wasn’t the only one. It was Ferdinand’s suffering that made her believe him, and she had no time to analyze the tragic truth behind the relationship that had formed with such apparently explosive spontaneity between herself and Maximilian.

I have enjoyed this series since the first novel I found quite by accident. While some see the evolution of the characters as bad for the series, I see it as perfectly normal that they would change and become more than they were before. I have read each book and been more than happy with the situations and the growth that Anita has experienced. The story is good with what I consider to be a nice balance between the relationship stuff and the work stuff. Anita has gone from single-minded to thinking outside her little box. There are multiple story lines going on here and while all are not resolved, each is at least presented and hopefully will be dealt with at a later date.

Anita has been called in by the FBI to help in a case involving someone raising zombies and using them in sex shows on the internet. Surprisingly she is recommended by an unlikely person who knows that if anyone can help, she can. Once Anita sees the footage for herself she is more than willing to help find the person doing it because they have stepped over the line in  more ways than one. The most disturbing thing about the zombies is that she has seen zombies like this before, but the person who animated them is dead and no one else should know how to do it.

While trying to help solve the case she has also been marginalized by many because of her engagement to Jean-Claude. They are looking for the perfect ring, or at least Jean-Claude is, and are having problems agreeing on a design. Anita has made a decision on something for her hand-fasting with Nathaniel and Micah however, causing a touch of jealousy from Jean-Claude. Not to mention the other men who want to be a part of their inner circle. Things are never simple with this many people in a relationship.

I like all the stories which are going on around the main mystery because they give more dimension to everything else. While people have complained in the past about the sex scenes there are not nearly as many in this book as before, mainly because it is no longer needed to tell that particular story. I kind of missed it since I had come to expect at least more than this. You get to see a few characters who have been absent for a while such as Richard and Raphael, who are mentioned but seldom seen. There is also more about some of the animal groups who have been folded into Jean-Claude and Anita’s main home group.

Some people may figure out the guilty party right away and others may take longer, either way I think it is a great ride. If you love the series then you are likely to be happy with this entry, if you had loved it but stopped reading then you should give this a look.
