Brief Cases

My overall rating for this anthology comes to an impressive 4.7 stars, reflecting the average of the individual stories contained within this collection. I had the pleasure of both reading and listening to the book, which greatly enhanced my enjoyment of the narratives. The audiobook features several talented narrators, including James Marsters, whose portrayal of Harry Dresden has become iconic, and the author himself, Jim Butcher. This volume comprises 12 stories, combining both original tales and previously published pieces from other anthologies.

**3.75 stars for “A Fistful of Warlocks.”** This story follows Anastasia Luccio in the early stages of her career as a Warden. Tasked with apprehending a rogue warlock, Anastasia travels to Dodge City, where she encounters legendary figures like Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and Doc Holliday. The narrative creates a captivating blend of Western atmosphere and supernatural intrigue, successfully showcasing the alliance and tension between the White Council and the Ventori. Additionally, we are treated to a glimpse of a younger, more inexperienced Anastasia as she navigates this unfamiliar territory.

**4.0 stars for “B is for Big Foot.”** Having read this story previously, I was pleased to find that my enthusiasm for it only grew upon re-reading. The plot revolves around Harry Dresden, who finds himself summoned into the woods for a mysterious job. Bigfoot, the legendary creature, enlists Harry’s help to check on his son, who is currently enrolled at a private school. The premise is amusing and light-hearted, showcasing a blend of humor and warmth as Harry embraces the unusual task at hand.

**5.0 stars for “AAAA Wizardry.”** This story marks a significant turning point for Harry, who takes on the role of mentor to a group of young wizards. He strives to impart values and knowledge about their responsibilities as Wardens. The narrative does an excellent job of highlighting Harry’s growth throughout the series, as he grapples with the weight of teaching and guiding a new generation while reflecting on his own long journey.

**5.0 stars for “I Was a Teenage Bigfoot.”** In yet another engaging installment, Harry receives another urgent call from Big Foot, this time concerning his son, Irwin, who is facing darker challenges at school, potentially involving malicious magic. As they reunite, it’s heartwarming to see how Irwin has absorbed Harry’s teachings, showcasing both a deeper connection and the lingering shadows of danger that encircle their lives.

**5.0 stars for “Curses.”** In this cleverly crafted tale, Harry finds himself embroiled in the famous Billy Goat Curse that has beleaguered the Chicago Cubs, preventing them from breaking their World Series drought. As Harry navigates this whimsical yet poignant narrative, he attempts to remedy the amusingly cursed situation, bringing a light-hearted touch to the often-serious tone of the series.

**5.0 stars for “Even Hand.”** This story delves into the complex character of John Marcone, the sole fully human participant in the Unseelie Accords. Known for his harsh demeanor, Marcone’s character is further developed when Justine seeks his protection. The story offers rich insight into Marcone’s perspective on Harry’s future, presenting a nuanced view of one of the series’s most intriguing villains.

**4.5 stars for “Big Foot on Campus.”** In this engaging narrative, Harry is once again recruited by Big Foot to assist his son Irwin, who may be in over his head due to matters of the heart. Initially reluctant, Harry agrees to help on the condition that Big Foot finally meets his child. This setup leads to a captivating exploration of family dynamics against a backdrop of potential danger.

**5.0 stars for “Bombshells.”** This story centers on Molly Carpenter and the profound impact that Dresden’s death has had on her life. Justine reappears, not as the damsel in distress but as a character seeking help for Thomas. The plot showcases Molly’s growth as she steps into action, combating a dire situation and trying to make a difference in the face of adversity.

**4.0 stars for “Cold Case.”** The narrative follows Molly Carpenter, the Winter Lady, along with Mab, as they embark on a mission to Alaska. While there, Molly is tasked with collecting a tribute from the Fae in Unalaska. However, her mission is complicated by the unexpected arrival of Carlos Ramirez, who brings with him a peculiar mystery that entangles Molly in a deeper conflict.

**5.0 stars for “Jury Duty.”** In this humorous yet tense installment, Harry finds himself serving on a jury, where his unique skill set adds a twist to the classic courtroom drama. The story captures the essence of Dresden’s character and the series’ hallmark blend of humor and supernatural intrigue.

**4.0 stars for “Day One.”** This tale features Waldo Butters, Harry’s friend and a capable coroner, who has undergone significant development throughout the series. As Butters takes on the mantle of a Knight of the Cross, he faces his first real battle, grappling with feelings of inadequacy as he prepares to step into a new role that requires courage and resilience.

**5.0 stars for “Zoo Day.”** I would gladly give this story more than 5 stars if I could! It’s a beautiful narrative capturing Harry, his daughter Maggie, and Mouse on their first meaningful outing together. The story artfully switches between their perspectives, illustrating Harry’s anxieties about fatherhood, Maggie’s hope to connect with her dad, and Mouse’s desire to protect his friends. As a darker element threatens to disrupt their joyful day, the trio must remain vigilant, adding depth to their familial bond.

For anyone missing the adventures of Harry Dresden and his eclectic group of companions, this anthology is a delightful treat that will surely capture your heart. Enjoy!

Bloodfever

Bloodfever

(Fever #2)

by Karen Marie Moning

I am enjoying listening to this series and find that I can keep up with the action even better. This was an author I had never read before but I continue to be happy that I was introduced to her because this keeps getting better. I find all the characters interesting and more than engrossing. These are people I could see myself around, even if they do tend to find danger at every turn. The descriptions of the world that Mac has found herself in and the types of people she meets continues to draw me in.

MacKayla Lane continues to live with Barrons and seek revenge for the death of sister. She still has not come to the understanding that her life as it was no longer exists and this is going to be that rude awakening she needs. Jericho Barrons has made life for Mac easier even if she does not see it. The fact that you cannot put your finger on what he is only adds to his mystic as he continues to save MacKayla from herself.

New players continue to enter the game with V’Lane making himself more available to Mac. Rowena finally acknowledges Mac as more than just a stupid girl who could get them all killed, but what does she really want from silly American? Can Mac trust any of these people since they all seem to want to use her in way or the other?

I will certainly be reading the next book to see what happens next. While I like Mac most of the time sometimes she seems like a total airhead with her Southern manners and ideas about how things should be. Then she will do something totally bad ass and I am sure we could hang. As for Barrons, I wouldn’t kick him out bed. This is a series that is starting pretty slowly but seems to be moving steadily forward, and it draws me in completely when I start to listen.

Darkfever

Darkfever
(Fever #1)

I have never read this author before though I had always intended to eventually. My friend wanted someone else to read it so she would have someone to talk about it with. Glad she insisted I listen sooner rather than later. I found myself drawn in right from the start and could not stop listening. The characters were all very well fleshed out and interesting, from the main characters to the peripheral characters along the way. I really enjoyed the story, it has a lot of elements that I have not seen in other stories featuring the Fae.

MacKayla ‘Mac’ Lane is a 22 year old bartender in a small Georgia town who does not have much ambition beyond capitalizing on her barbie doll looks and having a good time. When she gets a call saying that her older sister has been murdered in Ireland she finds that revenge takes precedence over everything else. Mac travels to Ireland with nothing more on her mind than forcing the police to reopen her sisters case and finding out who killed her and why. While she is doing that she starts to see things that cannot be real.

Jericho Barrons is the owner of a bookstore who meets Mac when she runs into his shop after getting lost on the way back to her Inn. Jericho is searching for the book that her sister mentioned in her message and advises Mac to leave Ireland immediately or end up like her sister. Barrons knows what Mac is but she does not have any idea what he is. He can be either a help or a danger, either way she needs him.

I liked the different types of Fae here because some I had never heard of from either court of faerie. Seelie or Unseelie, these are some killer Sidhe. I definitely recommend it!

Wild Card #1-6

wild card 1

I am always glad to have another Dresden story. This one is going to have all his friends and family helping to find out who or what is killing in their town. If you need a fix of Harry while you wait for his next full blown adventure I think this will do.

Though it was super short even for a comic.

Nice continuation but needed more

This was a decent entry but was way to short and did not really give much in the way of story. I liked it because it gives me my fix of Harry’s world, but I could do with something more. Fans of Dresden will feel compelled to read it.

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

wild card#4                                                                                  The action gets better

This is a great story with a bad guy who is definitely unique. Luck just wants to have fun and unfortunately this involves causing others to commit acts of violence he gets to enjoy. Wish it had been a bit longer but it got the job done. Dresden fans will be happy.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

wild card#5                                                                                  Vampires v The Mob v The Police

While there was not any real action in this story there were a few revelations about the situation that Harry and Chicago finds itself in. And really any day with Dresden is a 5 star day. Things are growing more tense with the factions as they all decide that it does not really matter if the crimes were committed by their enemy or someone else. This could be their chance to wipe out the competition.

Ready for the conclusion.

wild card#6                                                                             Dresden does it again

Okay , I have been waiting and I was not disappointed. Though it was short and the battle could have been fiercer, it was still the perfect vehicle for Harry to face off against Puck. Dresden fans have to read the conclusion. Loved it.

A Shiver of Light

A Shiver of Light (Merry Gentry #9)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I have been waiting for the continuation of this story since the last book ended and I think it was worth it. People complain about how descriptive LKH is about everything in her books, but this is not a short story and so I want to know what’s going on with everything I can. This is about creating a scene that is visual and brings you into the story itself, that is what happens here, you cannot help but be pulled in because you know what the setting is so well. It has been five (5) years and I was happy to have the men described to me in minute detail, it gave me a thrill to sit back and see them again after so long. I love this series and the characters who populate it. They are like friends who have been on vacation only to come back for a visit that is not nearly long enough.

Merry is very heavy with child and about to deliver any day, she cannot find out who the father or fathers are until then. That is both a good thing and bad thing since Taranis, the King of Light and Illusion and Merry’s uncle is claiming that he is the father of one or all of her babies from his rape of her. Though she was pregnant when he raped her, he is delusional and believes she consented and was grateful for his rescue. It’s hard enough becoming a parent without having your crazy, powerful uncle trying to claim them and you as a prize.

With everything else that is going on Merry is finding herself being taken to those who carry her nail around their necks as a talisman. She has become a kind of deity to them though she refuses the title. She and the men she love are all waiting for the children but are also dreading the fight they know they will face in order to stay safe and keep their children safe from harm.

This book was a lot more tame than any of those before it as far as violence and sex. With the coming of the babies things have been toned down for the time being. There is happiness, love, lust, pride, loss, and redemption to be found between the pages of this book. If you love or even like the of LKH you will be happy with this entry. I just hope it is not the last we will be hearing from Princess Meredith Nic Essus and loves.

Lords of the Were

Lords of the Were (Tales Of The Were #1)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I really liked this story for being interesting enough to keep my attention and having characters who I would love to know in the real world. The story grabs you immediately and makes you want to find out what could possibly be so mysterious about what the ladies are doing. As characters are introduced you will want to continue on because things get more interesting as they progress. The story flows well and is explained as it goes so you do not have some of those gaps which can be so annoying.

Allesandra (Allie) was orphaned at a young age and never knew her real parents, so when a woman comes to her and says that her mother asked her to get in touch with her when the time came she should have been surprised. What she finds out is that her mother was a priestess and now she must be consecrated into the service of the deity that her mother served. Allie feels so comfortable in a world she had no idea existed until her 32nd birthday when it all opened up to her. She seems a little timid at first but steps up and turns into a gutsy woman.

Tim and Rafe are the twin pair Lord’s of The Were who are sworn to protect Allie and love her if she will let them. They rule over all were no matter what they may be and have a pact with the Lady which keeps them all safe. They are two gorgeous hunks of wolf who take their responsibilities very seriously and will do anything to protect their people.

What no one realizes is that a plot to kill their priestess from an ancient evil is moving their way and they may not be as prepared as they think.

This had what I love in a story in that it made me cry, made me laugh, made me hot! Their was hot sex, good fighting, good magic (black and white), emotional moments, and family. A quick read but a satisfying one.

*This book contains scenes of menage a trois

Shattered Promises

Shattered Promises (Shattered Promises #1)

This is 4.5 stars for entertaining even though I was not sure what was going on for the longest time. I loved the characters and the way that they were introduced even though I would have liked to have gotten more information on some. The story was confusing for me but it still managed to maintain a flow that allowed me to follow where it was going and enlighten me along the way. The story is rather complicated and twisty so you really have to pay attention to who you are with and what they are doing.

We meet Gemma Lucas as she finds that emotions are no longer a thing only other people feel. Gemma is a student in her final year of college and has no idea what she is going to do when it ends. But sometimes you shouldn’t temp fate by wondering about such things because you may find out that she has plans you might not agree with. She meets Aisling and Alex Avery in one of her classes and feels an electrical charge when she is around Alex, but does not know what it means, and he seems to be unaware of it however.

When she starts to have strange dreams and waking nightmares Gemma believes that she is going insane, but that is far from the truth. Gemma finds herself being pulled into a world and situations that she would have never believed existed. She also finds herself with emotions that she has never had to contend with, and controlling them proves to be difficult. Does she love Alex or hate him? Can she trust Alex? Should she trust Alex? Lots of questions and few answers but finding out is going to be a heck of a ride.

As I said, I did not always know what was going on but half the fun is trying to figure out who to trust and who not to trust. I am just as baffled as Gemma but can’t wait to see if I have chosen wisely. There are thrills, chills, and paranormals galore.

Bride of Fae

Bride of Fae (Tethers, #2)Bride of Fae by L.K. Rigel
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I would give this 3.5 stars because while I enjoyed it, there were places that it lagged. This is the second in a series though the action takes place prior to the events in the first book.

Having read the first book it took me a while to reconcile what was happening here because the threads were pulled in several directions. Beverly is the mother of the heir of Dumnos, she is a simple woman who marries an Earl not for love but for the sake of a legacy. The love of her life is a faerie by the name of Dandelion, a prince of the Fae court.

There is travel through time, faerie intrigue, romance, corruption, and family loyalty.
It is worth a read!

Wyrd and Fae

Give Me: A Tale of Wyrd and Fae (Tethers #1)Give Me: A Tale of Wyrd and Fae by L.K. Rigel
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I’m going with 4 1/2 stars here, it would have been 5 but it didn’t totally blow me out of the water.

I started this not really expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. 😉 The writing is good and combines two of my favorite things witchcraft (wyrding) and the Fae. The story stretches from the middle ages to modern-day England in a small county off the beaten track which does not have cell reception or access to the internet. But they have a rich heritage and a wyrding woman who has been there from the beginning. The story goes from that castle in the middle ages to modern-day California and finally to modern-day Dumnos and back.

This is a story of love and loss and the desire to fix a mistake made a thousand years ago. The characters are well established and likable bringing you into their world more fully. Not something for everyone but romantics will enjoy this I’m sure. No real sex but descriptions of desire and longing that work for this.
