The Good, The Bad, and The Undead

the good, the bad, and the undeadThe Good, the Bad, and the Undead (The Hollows #2)
by Kim Harrison (Goodreads Author), Marquerite Gavin (Narrator)

I read this book about 6 years ago for the first time and thought it was one of the best thing I had ever read. I still think it is a great read but after listening to it closer I found some things that I did not see the first time. The characters are great, sometimes almost to good because I had a hard time liking some of them because of the way they were portrayed. The setting is of course fine since it is a real American city.

I did not like Rachel so much after this listen mainly because she came off as being very judgmental, overly confident, not a good friend, naïve, and a host of other things that are not flattering. But she does redeem herself by the end of the book.

Ley line witches are being killed and Rachel has decided that Trent Kalamack is the killer and no one else. The FIB calls her in to help them since it is an inderlander case and they want to get a first crack at it. The problem is that even though they have a suspect Rachel has her own agenda and does not want to follow the lead of the agent in charge of the case. Because of this Rachel finds herself once again in danger and not sure where the bullet might come from.

This is a very enjoyable series.

Dead Witch Walking

Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, #1)
Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows #1)
byKim Harrison( Author), Marguerite Gavin(Narrator)

This was my second reading of this book and I enjoyed it a great deal but found some things that I thought were perfect the first time not so perfect this time. The characters are well defined but still seem a little one note in their reactions sometimes. The story is still very interesting and gets you acquainted with a number of the principles in the Hollows and outside who we will see later. It is told mainly from Rachel’s view point which works, but do wish it could have branched out.

Rachel Morgan is a runner for Inderlander Security but feels that she is being under used and resents it. When an opportunity presents itself she decides that leaving her job would be the best thing to do. What she does not expect is for Jenks, a pixie, and Ivy, a living vampire, to jump ship with her. What she expects even less is to find herself under a death threat from the agency since they wanted her to quit, they just didn’t expect her to take their best runner with her. Now she must find a way to stay alive, live with a vampire who is going cold turkey off blood, and a pixie and his family.

Good start to a series that gets better and better as it goes along.

Sudden Backtrack (The Hollows #13.1)

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I was under the impression that this was going to be Al’s story, like him having the last word after all was said and done. This was nothing like what I expected. I was actually kind of bored while reading it, something that has never happened with one of Kim Harrison’s books. This just seemed like an after thought more than anything else, not a thought out short. I didn’t mind the length but I did mind that it was not a better short. It gets 3 stars because I love the characters even if I do not particularly like the story being told.

Newt and Gally (Al) have escaped but are trying to spin a curse on the elves which will affect their future children and they have chosen one of their hunters to be the one to spread it.

This was more about Newt than Al and it did give me the reason that she felt so close to Rachel. This I would say to read if you just want one more look at the world of the demons. It is very limited.

The Witch With No Name (The Hollows #13)

I hate to see a favorite series end but if it must then this is the way I want it to go out. I am so happy that Kim Harrison saw fit to to actually tie up all the loose threads that had come into play along the way. This was an exciting and tense entry that was well crafted and made for a great send off for Rachel, Ivy, and Jenks as they started to go their separate ways. The world inhabited by our people has always been vivid and very real, both reality and the Ever After.

Rachel made a deal with Cormel that she would find a way to return the souls of the undead vampires, because she was looking for a way to save Ivy. Cormel has become impatient and wants it done sooner than later. He makes an attempt on Ivy hoping to push Rachel into working faster. Rachel goes to the man who tried to kill her with the elves Goddess, Landon, for help and he pulls as fast one on her.

Rachel and Trent end up in a race to save not only Ivy but the source of magic as well from a madman who thinks he can destroy it and bring it back. Trent is also dealing with Ellasbeth again and trying to come to an agreement.

There is a lot going on and it may seem chaotic but it is what you would expect from these characters. Rachel does work my nerves a bit with her self-pity parties every step of the way. But I got the HEA I wanted and for me that is the best thing of all.

If you have been a fan of the Hollows then you cannot miss this! I would recommend it to everyone, but start at the beginning.  😀

The Holidays

Holidays Are Hell (The Hollows #5.5)Holidays Are Hell by Kim Harrison
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This anthology features 4 short stories by some very talented women.

Two Ghosts For Sister Rachel gives us an eighteen year old Rachel before she joined the IS and moved out into the world. We also get to view her home life with her mother and her true start at earth magic.

Run,Run,Rudolph is a fun story with a great romance and tense pursuit scenes. Jill and Nick make a great couple and I want more of them. It was funny, sexy, and very interesting.

Six is set in China and is the name of our heroine. She finds herself up against vampires and partners with a necromancer against her will (at first). She is very strong and makes things interesting.

The Harvest is set in of all places Las Vegas and features a plot of good vs. Evil. Some Archer is an agent of the Light who has dropped out only to return when she needs help from the man she left behind. Their reunion is brief and she steps into danger to secure her legacy.

All of the stories are well written and well worth your time.

The Hollows

Ever After (The Hollows #11)Ever After by Kim Harrison
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have been reading this series of books from the beginning and I love Rachel. You don’t often find yourself liking a heroine who sometimes seems completely lost but this girl has endured so much and come so far. I got to watch her mature into a pretty cool person even if she cannot pick men for anything. A world populated with everything from witches, demons, elves, were-persons and vampires is an interesting place indeed.

This book finds Rachel in over her head (as always) and trying to save the world once again. She does not have her usual crew of Ivy (a living vampire) and Jenks (a pixie) to back her up this time. Instead she is working with Trent Kalamack (rich handsome elf) and Al (her demon teacher) to go up against a threat to the demon realm and magic. The story is fast paced and grabs you from the start. All the questions from past adventures are answered here, but of course we get a whole new set to ponder.

If you have read any of the books in the past you will definitely want to read this one and if not you should maybe start. This is not a stand alone novel so pick up that first one and see if you don’t get interested enough to read them to this point. I do not think you will be disappointed.
